ORACAL® 651 is the go-to choice for crafters and sign-makers worldwide. Unlike budget vinyls, ORACAL offers a proprietary formulation that is easy to weed, easy to apply, and built to last.

Built for the Outdoors
Featuring a solvent-based permanent adhesive, this vinyl is designed to withstand the elements. It offers up to 6 years of outdoor durability, making it resistant to shrinking, cracking, and peeling when exposed to sun and rain.

High-Gloss Finish: Provides a premium, paint-like look on hard surfaces.

Superior Weedability: The silicone-coated backing paper ensures that even intricate designs and small letters weed effortlessly.

Permanent Adhesive: Strong, solvent-based adhesive bonds securely to glass, metal, plastic, ceramic, and wood.

Thin & Flexible: At just 70 microns (2.5 mil) thick, it contours easily to curved surfaces like mugs and car bumpers.

Weather Resistant: Waterproof and UV resistant, perfect for mailboxes, window signs, and vehicles.

2. Application Instructions – Oracal 651

1. Prepare and Cut the Design

  1. Create your design in your preferred cutting software.
  2. Do not mirror the artwork. Mirroring is normally required for heat-transfer vinyl, not self-adhesive vinyl.
  3. Place the vinyl on the cutting mat with the coloured vinyl facing upward and the paper liner facing downward.
  4. Select the appropriate adhesive-vinyl setting for your cutting machine.
  5. As a general starting point, use a blade depth of approximately 2 and a force of 10–12. Settings vary between cutters, blades and vinyl colours, so always perform a small test cut first.
  6. The blade should cut through the vinyl layer without cutting through the paper liner.
  7. Cut the design and unload the vinyl from the machine.

2. Weed the Design

  1. Trim away any unused vinyl around the design.
  2. Use a weeding tool to carefully remove the unwanted vinyl.
  3. Remove the centres of letters and other small internal details.
  4. Check that every required part of the design remains attached to the paper liner.

3. Apply the Transfer Tape

  1. Cut a piece of medium-tack transfer tape slightly larger than the weeded design.
  2. Remove the transfer tape from its backing, if applicable.
  3. Place the adhesive side of the transfer tape over the front of the vinyl design.
  4. Use a squeegee or scraper to burnish the transfer tape firmly onto the vinyl.
  5. Work from the centre outward to minimise wrinkles and air bubbles.
  6. Turn the design over and burnish the back of the paper liner for improved adhesion.

4. Prepare the Application Surface

  1. Apply the vinyl only to a smooth, clean and non-porous surface.
  2. Remove all dust, grease, wax, polish and other contaminants.
  3. Clean glass, metal, ceramic or suitable plastic with isopropyl alcohol and a clean, lint-free cloth.
  4. If using mild soapy water, rinse the surface thoroughly so that no soap residue remains.
  5. Allow the surface to dry completely before using the dry-application method.

Avoid applying vinyl to dusty, oily, damp, heavily textured or recently painted surfaces. Fresh paint should be allowed to cure fully according to the paint manufacturer’s instructions.

Dry-Application Method

Recommended for small-to-medium decals and straightforward placements.

  1. Place the decal over the surface and confirm its position before removing the paper liner.
  2. Use masking tape to create a hinge along one edge or through the centre of the design if additional alignment support is needed.
  3. Turn the decal over and slowly peel the paper liner away at a sharp angle.
  4. Ensure that the entire vinyl design remains attached to the transfer tape. If part of the design stays on the liner, lower the tape and burnish that area again.
  5. Hold the exposed adhesive away from the surface until you are ready to apply it.
  6. Lower the decal gradually onto the surface.
  7. Use a squeegee to apply firm, overlapping strokes from the centre outward.
  8. Burnish the complete design again, paying particular attention to small details and edges.
  9. Slowly peel the transfer tape back over itself at a sharp angle. Do not pull it directly away from the surface.
  10. If any vinyl lifts, lower the transfer tape, burnish the area again and continue peeling slowly.
  11. Press the completed design firmly onto the surface and remove any remaining air bubbles.

Wet-Application Method

Recommended for larger decals and smooth surfaces such as glass, metal or vehicle panels. Do not use this method for very small lettering, layered graphics or surfaces that may trap moisture.

  1. Clean the surface thoroughly.
  2. Prepare a mild application solution using clean water and only a very small amount of dishwashing liquid—approximately one drop per spray bottle.
  3. After applying the transfer tape, remove the paper liner to expose the adhesive side of the vinyl.
  4. Lightly mist the application surface and exposed adhesive. Do not soak them.
  5. Position the decal on the wet surface and slide it gently into the correct position.
  6. Hold the design in place and use a squeegee to push the liquid and air bubbles outward from the centre.
  7. Make firm, overlapping passes until as much moisture as possible has been removed.
  8. Allow the vinyl sufficient time to bond before removing the transfer tape. Drying time depends on the temperature, humidity, surface and size of the decal.
  9. Once the transfer tape releases cleanly, peel it back slowly at a sharp angle.
  10. If the vinyl lifts, stop peeling and allow more drying time before trying again.
  11. After removing the transfer tape, gently squeegee the design again while protecting it with the removed liner or a clean sheet of backing paper.
  12. Allow the adhesive to cure before washing or exposing the decal to harsh weather.

Important Application Tips

  • Always perform a test cut and test application before starting a full production run.
  • Apply in a clean, dry and dust-free environment.
  • Avoid applying vinyl to extremely hot or cold surfaces.
  • Do not stretch the vinyl during installation, as it may shrink back or lift later.
  • Overlapping squeegee strokes help prevent trapped air and uneven adhesion.
  • Avoid washing, scraping or pressure-cleaning the newly applied decal while the adhesive is curing.
  • Adhesion may be unreliable on low-energy plastics, silicone-treated surfaces, rubber, textured walls or peeling paint.
  • For vehicle applications, do not place vinyl over damaged paint, rust, wax or ceramic coatings.
